A PMO is a center of expertise focused on improving the management of projects, programs or portfolios – with the term "PMO" often used generically for all three types. PMOs were often created to address challenges of reliably delivering IT projects; use different organization styles (“Lite,” Coach,” “Strong Manager”), and increasingly have been charged with extended program and portfolio management responsibilities.
