The BI world is one made up of fads. First, we started out with basic reports and building data warehouses. Then we moved on to ROLAP, MOLAP and HOLAP. Web delivery of reporting and analysis became the "next big thing." And most recently, we've moved on to customer personalization in the business-to-customer (B2C) world. While the B2C personalization fad is still upon us¾ companies are just now starting to get their hands around true personalization¾ business-to-business (B2B) is what is making the biggest splash out there in the marketplace. Companies like Ariba, CommerceOne and VerticalNet have capitalized on enabling B2B interactions with major corporations. Industry experts predict that B2B will be a trillion dollar business in the next five years. So where does BI fit in with B2B? "Impartial observers from other planets would consider ours an utterly bizarre enclave if it were populated by birds, defined as flying animals, that nevertheless rarely or never actually flew. They would also be perplexed if they encountered in our seas, lakes, rivers and ponds, creatures defined as swimmers that never did any swimming. But they would be even more surprised to encounter a species defined as a thinking animal if, in fact, the creature very rarely indulged in actual thinking."
