In '97 and early '98 it was all the rage. KM was the next big acronym on a par with BPR, BRE and TQM. From the perspective of software vendors, it was everything from document management to messaging to data warehousing and data mining. Every vendor wanted a piece of this highly marketable term. However, after a very short honeymoon period, the fact that it seemed to be everything made it feel more like nothing. Today as an Internet buzzword, it has taken a back seat (or maybe several seats back) to e-commerce and in the business world it has moved from the executive offices down to a lower level function. I personally believe that there are two basic approaches to KM. The key to getting the most mileage out of the concept is to figure out what angle best suits your company's needs, make your goals as measureable as possible, then focus all of your efforts on making it happen.

Knowing your customers
Ironically, the e-commerce leaders on the web have always understood that knowledge management is key to making the most of each web transaction.
