It is a rare exception when a technology magazine, consultant or vendor does not stress that to be competitive today an enterprise needs to deploy enterprise solutions within three to six months. There are instances where a robust enterprise solution is deployed within that time frame, but they are the exception rather than the rule. It is equally true that an enterprise cannot afford to wait until the fully robust solution is achieved before deploying if it is going to remain competitive. The answer is to focus on investment return first rather than the deployment of a complete enterprise solution. I understand the executive's frustration. As an enterprise architectural consultant, a large amount of my time is spent attending architectural seminars, assessing proposed business solutions, attending technology demonstrations and keeping abreast of technological advances for possible advantage to my current client's business areas.
