Offshoring is no longer a new trend. Conducting application development, support or infrastructure activities in some low-cost region of the world is an activity that most large companies regularly engage in. When done properly, offshoring can present huge benefits to corporations, often reducing resource costs by 40 to 50 percent.
However, the importance of clear and detailed requirements during the offshoring efforts is critical to success. Without well-documented requirements, the promise of strong financial benefits from offshoring can quickly erode. Often, companies try to simply replicate an onshore project in an offshore model, but there are significant complexities like language, time difference and limited knowledge that must be taken into consideration. Companies taking efforts offshore should not strive to maximize ROI but maximize success.
