In the second part of our series on BI Methodology and its application for the future, we will look at the Business Case and the Business Question Assessment (requirements) phases of the methodology and look at their applicability in future applications of BI. You probably dont know the number of times that Ive gone into a client and asked to see a business case or business requirements and gotten a blank stare in response. It makes common sense to quantify the value behind a new initiative in a business case or to record new requirements in a business question assessments, but the fact is that most clients are reluctant to do that. The bottom line is that business analysis and justification ALWAYS need to be done regardless of whether it is a brand new data warehousing effort, an addition to an existing business intelligence system or even a new delivery mechanism for the data warehouse. Every technological decision needs to make business sense.
