Labor Day Blues

by Andre Leclerc

September 2, 2002

I love holidays. There is such a cheerful atmosphere in the preparation for a long weekend, and Labor Day is no exception. This weekend I intend to forget all about software and attend a blues festival in the Dallas area. Well, maybe I won’t be able to quite forget software. After all there are the 30+ embedded software devices in my automobile. No doubt the major bands at the festival will use a variety of computers to enhance and shape the sound of their instruments. And of course I will print the map and the driving instruction to the location using Mapquest on my high speed DSL line while listening to my favorite BB King CD playing though the three or four software devices in my stereo while I use my remote computer control. My father will probably call while I am at the festival, and the network of distributed computers capturing voice mail messages at the Verizon CO (central office) will promptly record the number and time of the call.

Most people would be surprised to learn that they are modern day programmers of real-time devices using object-oriented software techniques (you do use your remote, don’t you).
