Professional Associations: Serving Their Members' Career Interests?

Great! I found an association offering a captive audience full of project manager-types keeping up with their industry knowledge and, perhaps, if I am lucky, posting their resumes for potential career moves. I call the contact, excited by the possibilities of all of the resumes and professional contacts. Then, just as I am about to sign up for the database and post resumes, I see that this aspect of the association is run by a well-known search firm. The search firm will be my contact for utilizing the database. Okay, I you know how I feel about search firms--it is pretty much a crapshoot. They are necessary for our industry and great tools when you find one that works for you, no matter which side of the interview desk you are sitting on. However, the first thoughts that run through my mind are that I am probably going to get raked over the coals or am I going to work with a group of professionals who just want to make sure they connect the best possible candidate with my opening. Are you guessing what happened?
