Beyond CMMI... PEMM

Situation: You're Planning to Change Important Business Processes...

tempIn IT we talked forever about CMMI.  Lately, to judge any offshore effort you must at least consider the outsourcers' CMMI maturity level.

In the latest Harvard Business Review, Michael Hammer offers a VERY useful process audit toolkit that will help you plan process changes, track progress, and understand roadblocks to the change.  The framework he uses is called Process and Enterprise Maturity Model (PEMM).  The downloads related to the article are extremely useful and offer a simple (red, yellow, green) view of the results.

Here are the downloads:
- Assessing the Maturity of Your Processes
- Evaluating the Maturity of Your Enterprise

PEMM is NOT:
- IT-specific
- applicable to specific processes (not does it recommend or specify any)

Briefly, PEMM looks at:

Process Enablers
- Design that specifies how the process should be executed
- Performers who carry out the process
- Owner who is responsibel for the process and the results it produced.
- Infrastructure supporting the process
- Metrics to track process performance

Enterprise Capabilities
- Leadership that supports the creation of the new process
- Culture that supports or opposes the change
- Expertise in process redesign
- Governance that specify rules around making and sustaining the change.

James Ransdall says:

My company has an innovation managment solution that, in the right hands, can be truly transformational. The "uber-process" that we address is one we term the "Innovation-to-Production" process. Our challenge is that the process itself is, in most companies, not terribly mature, owing in large measure to the general weakness of supporting technologies, which is, for my company, very much a good news / bad news proposition. The good news is we can really help. The bad news is we have to :-). If we don't help our clients mature this process, then our business suffers. So, Hammer's PEMM framework is showing up as a very practical and powerful tool for helping us help our clients achieve rapid maturation of a very high stakes business process. I haven't seen something this smart, and by smart I mean powerful and practical, in some time.

Richard Newman says:

Thx for the information. Just the thing I am looking for.

We are a small company, with our own software development devision in India. We have been working on the usage of CMMI in our organisation. Now we need to asses if we have made any progress ... The toolkit should be able to help us out.
