Sometimes you need to look outside of your current project team to get the skills, expertise or just warm bodies to get the job done. That's where subcontractors can be your best friends. Of course, friends can be fickle, so you have to choose them carefully. That's what Grace learned on her last project, where a bad subcontractor--and a bad contract--almost cost her the project.

 

Grace was working on a government project that required her to outsource some of the work to a specific type of company. It's all part of the government keeping an eye out for the little guys, pushing work to small businesses. Nothing wrong with that. What was wrong, however, was the not-so-competent database administrator that the subcontractor sent to the client--the one that crashed the client's system and ended up costing a couple thousand dollars and nearly irreparable damage to Grace's credibility as a project manager.

As it turns out, the DBA wasn't even part of the company that was subcontracted; she was a "sub-subcontractor" whose assignment was actually in violation of the contract Grace had with that company.
