The PMO is in place so no more worries, right? Wrong! In today’s economy, businesses must continuously improve processes and the PMO needs to continue to add value by maturing with the business. How do you know that your PMO and project management processes are effective? Who sets the standards and how do you compare your PMO to those standards?
Assessment Model
The answers to these questions are simple, but the assessment process is a long journey and is not simple. The simplest assessment still takes weeks. The maturity levels must be defined, adequate organizational coverage needs to be identified and an assessment process prescribed. Technical guidance may need to be obtained to help develop a comprehensive assessment report. Conducting an assessment and providing an improvement plan requires changing behavior, institutionalizing new behavior, process documentation and managing the artifacts of the new processes. These are the hardest things to do. To assess the maturity of one’s PMO requires methods to facilitate assessments, methods to identify deficiencies and guidance for selection of improvement plans.
