Frosty the PM

As I write this, I am further north than I have ever been. I’m not technically in the Arctic as I am below the Arctic Circle, but I am more than 63 degrees north and I am in a very remote part of Canada. I’m in a place called Iqaluit, and in the last two weeks I have had to learn to rethink a lot of my project management beliefs. When I first got here I thought there was simply a different set of rules up here. But the more I experienced of this environment, the more I realized that it wasn’t that the rules were different, but rather that the approach had to be more refined to deal with the realities of life in a remote part of the world.

As gantthead is featuring real PM stories this month I wanted to share with you what is a very real story for me, and why I think that I am now a better project manager for the brief two-week period that I have spent here. I don’t want this to be a travelogue, but a brief overview of Iqaluit is necessary. Iqaluit is a new city--70 years ago it didn’t exist, and it has grown rapidly in the last 10 years since it became the capital of Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut.
