There is a big difference among job, company and career loyalty. Yet many pundits tie them all together, which is a mistake. If you’relucky enough to work for a great company that doesn’t just promote job security, but has made it its credo and stands by it, you’ve hit the career jackpot. The reality is that it’s difficult to latch onto a job that offers security and instills heartfelt organizational loyalty.
Sadly, organizational loyalty--if actually felt--is short-lived. In fact, many job searchers never think about planting career roots. The erratic unpredictability of the workplace forces short-term thinking, because both the economy and technology are always changing. And many of the changes are unexpected and sudden.
Most technical professionals don’t give job security and loyalty much thought these days, because job tenure is tied either to their productivity or tothe erratic whims of their industry.
