Of the few disparities that seem to exist in the project management field today, one of the biggest and more elusive seems to be leadership. All project managers are not automatically great leaders because they took a few courses in critical path schedules, resource planning or objective setting. There isn’t a certification for leadership, nor is there a guaranteed development path you can follow to become one.
Throughout history, political, military and business leaders have come from all walks of life with vastly different styles, but they shared some similar leadership qualities. Think of Washington and Lincoln, Gates and Welch, Churchill and Eisenhower. As a project manager, you would be well served to examine and take stock of your own leadership skills.
Here are some of the similar traits that are common among great leaders. These are traits that will set you apart as a leader and distinguish you from the field of everyone else.
