Although Winston Churchill had a lengthy career spanning five decades, this Lessons from History series will focus on a short period that starts in May 1940 and ends in October 1940. It relates to a perilous situation where the United Kingdom was on the brink of an invasion and resulted in the Battle of Britain, which shifted the course of the World War II.
The story is about the leadership of Churchill the PM, Prime Minister--or better still, Project Manager--who as he came into office in a period of calamitous change faced a potential disaster. It was a major undertaking where someone had to step up and take control of the situation, a project that no one wanted, a true project from hell. It was a desperate situation for a nation that had been ignoring all the warning signs for the best part of a decade. In this tight time frame, it boiled down to finding and implementing a solution that would extend Churchill's limited forces and maximize their effectiveness.
So what is so important about this period of history? Simply put, the outcome of it was truly colossal and it still reverberates today.
