Format: Report
Numbers, numbers, numbers... An important ingredient in any business case is a quantification of the benefits of doing the proposed project--a list of the outcomes the project will produce, stated in measurable terms of value and linked directly to the stakeholders, business plan objectives and business strategy objectives they support. Get your business case rolling by specifying those benefits in terms that upper management will want to hear. Here is an example.

"This is a 'feel good' template that could do with more guidance on the process to define and link the benefits to the sought objectives. My suggestion to get value out of the template is to fill the columns in reverse. For instance if we start with the project to define the benefits we really have started a process to justify the project rather than the project being the natural result of what is required to realise an objective. Thus, state the business objectives or drivers for change (vision/plan), then identify those demanding the change (customers, owners and employees) and state what transformation (outcome) they expect to experience as the new 'business as usual' environment (ie post project). All that then remains is the quantification of the project in terms of benefits from shifting the business from the current state (as-is) to the new way of working. "
